Is podiatry covered under my private health insurance?
Podiatry is covered under private health insurance, however, not
under all levels of cover.This of course depends on the fund, generally
speaking, higher levels of cover will include Podiatry services.

Do I need a referral to see a Podiatrist?
A referral is not necessary to see a Podiatrist. However, having
a G.P. referral helps establish a line of communication between you
G.P. and the Podiatrist. This applies to private patients only. If
you are a DVA (Department of Veterans Affairs) or Medicare patient
a G.P. Referral is required before or at the time of consultation.

What qualifications should my Podiatrist have?
All qualified Podiatrists should have a Bachelor of Science (Podiatry)
or an equivalent. They should also be currently registered
by the Podiatry Registration Board.

What’s the difference between a Chiropodist and a Podiatrist?
The word Chiropodist was replaced by the word Podiatrist in the late
1970’s. This corresponded with the regulation of the
profession and the change in academic requirement. Changing
the term also eliminated any confusion between Chiropody and Chiropractic.

I have a very painful corn, will it hurt to have it treated?
A corn is basically compounded hard skin that usually contains no
blood vessels or nerve endings. This means that the corn can
be removed using a scalpel blade without any pain.

What other things to podiatrists treat other than corns and
callus?
Podiatrists are able to treat or advise on any foot related condition. For
example; ingrown toenails, fungal infections, flat feet or fallen
arches, shin splints and many other walking related conditions. |
